Many people look forward to their retirement as a time where they get to travel. Finally a time with no set office hours and no more Monday to Friday workdays. This flexibility means that many retirees pack their bags and enjoy the beauty the world has to offer! But are you doing this in the smartest way? There are many things to think about if you are travelling in your retirement.
Together with Premier Bathrooms I have made a guide of what to consider before you embark on your journey.
- Think about funding your travels
- Prioritise destinations
- Make use of senior discounts
- Consider a caravan holiday
Think about funding your travels
As a retiree you are most likely living off some sort of budget. Before you book that trip, make sure you have a healthy cashflow to keep your day to day life funded. There are multiple ways to make some extra cash whilst you are travelling.
For example, you can rent out your home while you are away. This is a great way to earn some extra pennies whilst you’re away, especially if you are travelling for a longer period of time. There are multiple websites and companies out there that can help you with renting out your home. To improve the rentability of your property there are multiple things you can consider adding to your house, like: a stairlift, an accessible bathroom and step free access throughout the property.
Prioritise destinations
I’m pretty sure everyone has some sort of bucket list of countries they would like to visit. How great would it be to complete this! Keep in mind that not every destination will be as accessible as you get older.
Although you might feel young and free now, the (sad) truth is that this will probably not always be this way. Prioritise destinations with long flights and those that might be less accessible for everyone. Always wanted to climb a particular mountain? Do it now!
Make use of senior discounts
You might not be too keen on using those senior discounts as they might make you feel old. But there is no need to feel this way! Embrace your age and everything that comes with it. Senior discounts are a fantastic way to save money in most purchases you do, especially travel. It might be one thing to not ask for a senior bus ticket if you don’t feel like it, but don’t turn down a senior discount on big cost items. Train tickets, hotels, airlines and lots of other areas you can save money on!
Into road trips? Maybe a caravan holiday is for you!
Have you ever considered a caravan holiday? It’s a great way to travel around without losing too much comfort. Most caravans come with a toilet, shower and small kitchen so you can still have home comforts while you’re away. Especially for those of lesser mobility or older age this is often prioritised when travelling.
With a caravan holiday you can travel around the whole of the UK, explore the European continent or travel even further. It’s all down to you! It really gives you a sense of freedom and choice of where to go, without giving up basic facilities.
These are some tips to help you plan your retirement travel. Do you have any advice? Let me know in the comments!
