When you think of a celebration of truly English food and drink, wine might not be the first to come up on your list. However, recent years have shown a large increase in English wine consumption. Nowadays, there are as many as 577 vineyards across the UK! To raise awareness of the quality of English wines (and let’s be honest, who needs a reason for a glass of wine anyway), this year’s English Wine Week takes place between Saturday 26th May – Sunday 3rd June 2018.
One of the restaurants which celebrates the English wines is Roast. Located atop of Borough Market, this restaurant serves their British inspired dishes with locally produced wines. With a whopping 26% of white wine served in the restaurant coming from England, this is a must-visit for English wine lovers.
The restaurant has organised an event for English Wine Week on Tuesday 29th May. You and your friends will be served a selection of small plates which are paired with an English and a foreign wine. The competition is to identify the English wine, and you can win a prize! Don’t feel intimidated, everyone is welcome to join – whether you are a true wine connoisseur or are only able identify wine by colour (white, rose and red).
Together with English winemakers Chapel Down, Roast have created a bespoke ‘daily market menu’, which includes many tasty cocktails. This is available all day throughout May – so there’s still some time to try it out! There are drinks like a ‘Bergamot Spritz’ – including Chapel Down vodka, Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto, elderflower liquer and soda and a ‘Spring Blossom’ – with Chapel Gin. After these cocktails, you can enjoy a three course meal with a glass of English wine per course. With dishes such as chilled pea and courgette soup, tender pork belly with mashed potato and Bramley apple sauce, and creamy caramel set custard with spiced cherries and gingerbread popcorn, it is sure to be a great experience.
The Chapel Market Menu is available for £40pp including wines, and the tickets for the English Wine Week event are priced at £55.
