3 super tasty healthy dog treat ideas

Since we adopted Monty last year I am obsessed with finding healthy dog food and treats. Annoyingly, he is the fussiest dog when it comes to what he eats! This means I have to be creative and find different treats than your normal shop might have.

Of course Monty loves unhealthy treats like sausages, cheese and other fatty foods. But a healthy diet is super important for a dog! To make sure I have healthy treats for any occassion, here are my three favourite dog treat ideas.

Please note that you might want to check with your regular vet before giving your dog new food or treats.

For every day: Angell Petco fish treats

When we take Monty out and about I always make sure I have a couple of treats in my bag. Most of the time I want to take a shop-bought treat for the ease of it, but these are often very unhealthy. So if you’re looking for a ready-made treat that is healthy for your pooch, Angell Petco is the one to go with. We kindly got sent some samples of their fish treats and Monty absolutely adores the entire range.

I specifically recommend their Super Training Treats, as they are the perfect size for a training session. I would usually use small bits of cheese or sausage for Monty’s training sessions, but these treats are so much healthier! The fish skin tubes are ideal as a ‘bigger’ treat, let’s say after a long walk or if you need to keep your dog busy for a while.

For a hot day: Homemade ice cream

I love making ice cream! I have done it for ‘humans’ plenty of times, but never really thought about doing it for a dog until recently. I simply mash up a banana, a tablespoon of peanut butter and some greek yoghurt if I have any in the fridge.

Put them in a cute dog bone mold like the one in the picture (or a simple ice-cube tray will do) and freeze them for a couple hours. These are ideal to give to your dog on a hot day!

For a special day: Homemade Dog Donuts with Bacon

What dog wouldn’t love a homemade bacon donut every day! Although these aren’t super unhealthy, I’d say this treat is more for a special occassion: every now and then! I’m definitely making these for Monty’s next birthday.

All you need is:

  • 1 Cup Flour
  • 1 Cup Oats
  • 1/3 Cup Coconut Oil
  • 1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 2 Eggs
    For the topping:
  • Greek Yoghurt
  • Bacon Bits

You can find the full recipe here.
