Going on our summer holiday is usually our favourite time of year. Time away in the sun, relaxing and having fun. Usually we pack our cases with books, cameras, sunglasses and lots more, but do we think about what all this costs? When it comes to your holiday we calculate the travel, accommodation and food and drink expenses, but do you add up what you have spent before you even go away? Things like tablets, cameras and luggage can really eat into your holiday budget – unless you know when to buy these items. Idealo.co.uk, leading shopping price comparison site, have investigated what months are best and worst to buy your summer essentials and the result might surprise you!
Idealo’s study looked into 750,000 products across 16 travel categories to show which months would be best for Brits to buy their summer holiday picks. Although in first instance we would have guessed it would be around winter time, the result actually shows something completely different! Most summer goods like tents, tablets, luggage and other electronics offer the best deals from June to August. So no sweat if you have left your holiday shopping to the last minute. Half of the products are actually cheaper in the summer months. From big ticket items like tablets, satnavs and baby travel cots to relatively cheap items like goggles and rucksacks.
The research shows that cameras see the biggest price difference. Those looking for a new camera to snap those holiday memories can save an average of £79 by purchasing in July and as much as £125 if bought in September. This is a big saving on your holiday budget in comparison to most expensive time to buy a camera, which is in May when prices rocket to £1,025 on average.
Idealo’s Katy Phillips commented: “The fact that they can save £201 on travel essentials in July and August alone, should soften the blow to the holiday finances.”
The research showed that demand for 38% of travel essentials is highest in November. This is due to many shoppers expecting to get a good deal on Black Friday. Sadly only 6% of travel products are cheaper in this month, one example being sunglasses. As Kathy from Idealo says:“Although many holidaymakers trust Black Friday, our research shows you don’t always get the cheapest deal on the big discount day of the year. Our study reinforces that prices fluctuate throughout the year which is why our advice is to stay savvy all year round and continually compare to make sure you get the best deal.”
