It’s all about the journey, not the destination: Don’t hit the road without these road trip essentials

Does the spontaneity of the open road seem irresistible to you? More and more of us are ditching our traditional vacations for time on the road with our closest friends and our favourite tunes. It’s easy to see why. You’re completely in charge of your journey and your experience, making everything flexible and spontaneous, you get to reconnect with family or friends, see new places and make plenty of memories along the way.

But, how do you prevent your dream road trip from turning into a nightmare? The last thing you want is to get lost, run out of money or get involved in a road traffic accident – if you have been in a road collision involving a truck, get in touch with a truck accident lawyer in Lafayette now. The best thing you can do is prepare as much as possible, don’t worry, it won’t take the spontaneity out of your trip, it just means you can enjoy the experience even more.

Read on for your road trip essentials

A plan

Planning your route makes absolute sense. Of course, it’s all about the journey, but having an end goal is a must. When you plan your route, you can add in extra stops, points of interest, fuel stops, overnight stops and time to explore! Everything is subject to change but having a simple route will make things run a little smoother and stop you from getting lost.

An emergency car kit

If you break down, have an accident or find yourself stuck in traffic for hours, then you’ll be glad you packed the following:

  • Torch with batteries
  • Additional clothing/blankets
  • Jump cables
  • Spare phone
  • List of important numbers
  • Empty fuel can
  • First aid kit
  • Road warning triangles

Know how to change a tyre

If you don’t know how to change a tyre, then there’s no better time to learn. This will save you paying for a tow truck to come and collect you and those additional repair bills.

Plenty of food and water

Bottled water and lots of snacks will keep you going between stops. Try to include a few healthier options in your snack collection – just to keep your energy levels up and your salt/sugar intake down!

Good friends

It sounds a little cheesy, but a road trip can make or break a friendship. Petty arguments over who ate all the chips, or who paid for fuel, or someone who won’t contribute to the driving or help you with directions. Always choose good road trip partners!
