Since we adopted a dog we are always on the look out for dog-friendly pubs and bars. Will and I are both self-employed and enjoy working from different pubs. We recently moved to Bedford and are now exploring the best dog-friendly pubs around here! There are some fantastic places on this list, that are both nice in the day time for a cup of tea and slice of cake as well as evening entertainment. Here are our favourites:
The Embankment
Handy information:
I want to live in this pub. For me it’s just has it all: riverside, outside space, very dog friendly, tasty food and drink and a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy a big dog walk on the other side of the river and then settle at the Embankment for a while. The dog will love the dog treats that they offer and you must try the fresh (warm) bread with garlic butter. In the day time you will find people working from here or taking some time to read the newspaper. As it gets later, the atmosphere gets more fun, but it’s always relaxed and friendly. In the summertime the terrace that overlooks the river gets busy, so arrive early for a spot in the sunshine.
The Park Pub & Kitchen
Handy information:
You could easily spend an entire day at The Park, from brunch through to the last round at the bar. Their airy and relaxed conservatory is perfect to work from, catching up with a friend or reading a book. But my favourite spot are the two seats by the fireplace (conveniently located next to the bar…). They serve delicious, locally sourced food and their vegetarian platter is an absolute winner!
Brewhouse & Kitchen
Handy information:
Brewhouse is an easy-going brewpub with a lot of space for you and your pup. With plenty of events like a weekly pub quiz, brewery events and live music, you will never get bored of visiting this pub. Tasty, classic dishes on the menu and a very wide range of delicious beers. The vibe is always friendly and the staff usuall provide a water bowl for Monty without us even prompting. There are plenty of corners and seats you can settle with your dog without him getting too much stimulation and distractions.
Albero Lounge
Handy information:
Monty gets beyond excited when we walk into Albero Lounge. This relaxed café is perfect for a late afternoon cocktail, casual dinner or drink at the bar. I love their dedicated vegan food menu and they have one of the biggest veggie/vegan menu’s in town. Their location, right by the river and close to lots of green areas means that Albero Lounge is a perfect stop-off on a long dog walk. The staff are always happy to see dogs come in (they even have dog treats!).
The first thing I was taught when I moved to Bedford: “Rose ’til close!’. This famous local saying relates to this very pub. You might not want to stay until close if you’re bringing your pup, but it is a lovely pub to enjoy in the day time or early evening. The Rose has a relaxed atmosphere, but as mentioned you might want to avoid Friday and Saturday evening after 8ish if you’re looking for somewhere quiet with your dog. Right in the heart of town, The Rose’s main attraction for us is that they show the sports. Combine this with great food and craft beers and we’re happy! I’d highly recommend the smoky sloppy joe pizza.
Do you have or know a pub that should be added to this list? Let me know and I’ll add it!
