With so many destinations flaunting their picture-perfect beaches and luxurious accommodation options, it can be tough to separate one Caribbean island from another. However, there’s one Caribbean vacation destination that sets itself apart from the rest — Jamaica.
It’s true that many people visit Jamaica for the postcard-worthy beaches and warm weather, but this is only a small part of what the island has to offer. Jamaica is appealing for its rich culture and notable attractions that simply don’t exist anywhere else. From exploring the island’s waterfalls to rum tours and charming beach houses for rent in Jamaica, these are a few of the many things that set this country apart from other islands in the Caribbean.
Exploring Jamaica’s Waterfalls
Jamaica’s beaches aren’t the island’s only natural wonders. Enjoy nature away from the salty sea and swim in one of the area’s many freshwater lagoons. While Dunn’s River Falls is a popular choice, YS Waterfalls is a little more off the beaten path. This seven-tiered waterfall is refreshing, relaxing, and exciting; although, hiring a professional guide is always recommended. Having an expert by your side will allow you to sit, swim, and jump on and around the falls safely. Guides here can even set up rope swings that make the trip even more exciting for the entire family. The photos and memories you create are guaranteed to make your friends back home jealous.
Jamaican Bobsledding in Ocho Rios
Although you wouldn’t think of a winter sport in Jamaica, you may be familiar with the country’s bobsledding history made famous by the team’s debut in the 1988 Winter Olympics. The Rainforest Adventures tour company in Ocho Rios takes visitors on the ultimate Jamaican bobsledding experience on the side of the mountain near Dunn’s River Falls. Start the day by riding the scenic chairlift to the mountain, then try out one of the many activities, including riding the custom-designed bobsled coaster, which zooms down a 1,000-meter-long track and is completely driven by gravity.
The site also includes an informative and fun history museum, zip lines, water slides, a pool, bar restaurant, and more. It’s easy to fill a full day with fun, adventure, and even some relaxation at the Rainforest Adventures site.
ATV Tours
Hopping aboard an ATV is one of the most exciting ways to experience Jamaica’s beaches, countryside, and mountains. A number of tour companies provide guides that will pick you up at your hotel or villa and take you to a safari ranch, where you can hop aboard an ATV for hours of fun in the sun. The Sandy Bay ATV adventure takes riders through the Blue Hole Estate, past a small farming village, to some of the country’s oldest churches, and to the slopes of a picture-perfect mountain peek. Bring your camera and be prepared to get a little dirty.
Visit Blue Mountain National Park
Blue Mountain is Jamaica’s highest peak and is also home to the world-famous Blue Mountain coffee. A must-see for anyone who enjoys natural wonders or a good cup of joe, this area offers some of the most stunning views on the entire island. There are more than 200,000 acres of tropical rainforest to experience, which means you probably won’t be able to explore it all in a single day.
Jamaica’s Blue Mountains National Park is also home to an abundance of flora and fauna, including rare birds and butterflies. Here, you can find more than 800 species of endemic plants and the world’s second largest butterfly. Take at least a full day — or better yet maybe two — to explore the Blue Mountains, and you won’t be disappointed.
Stop by the Bob Marley Museum
Bob Marley is one of the most iconic musical artists of the 20th century, and he hails from the beautiful island of Jamaica. The Bob Marley Museum is a look into the life of the reggae musician who truly put Jamaica on the map. The museum is the former home of this reggae icon and is also located in the heart of Jamaica’s capital city, Kingston. Visitors can take a roughly one-hour-long tour, which includes entering Bob Marley’s home, a short video presentation, visiting the exhibition hall, exploring the grounds, stopping by the gift shop, and dining at the One Love Cafe. Even more, you’ll get to see Marley’s original record shop and the studio where some of his best hits were recorded. Anyone who enjoys music or music history will enjoy this stop.
Sign up for the Appleton Estate Rum Tour
You’re not living on island time until you’ve had a homemade Jamaican rum, and there’s no better place to sip in that at Appleton Estate. Take the Appleton Estate Rum Tour, which will give you an inside look on how this world-famous rum was made. You’ll start by learning about the origins of rum making in the 1800s and how the process has changed over time. If you enjoy the flavor (we can almost guarantee you will), you can purchase their exclusive rum which is only sold at the estate and a few select spots on the island.
These are just a few of the many reasons why Jamaica is so much more than your typical Caribbean vacation destination. Perfect for families, couples, and even solo travelers, visitors can find a variety of activities for all ages and interests, whether you’re into sightseeing and history or nonstop outdoor adventure.
