Happy St Patrick’s Day! During a year when everything that can go wrong has gone wrong, holidays like Paddy’s Day are fantastic ways to take the edge off. Yes, travelling abroad is still out of the question, and could be until the summer of 2021. By that time, the occasion will be long gone.

Still, that doesn’t mean there aren’t staycation destinations. More importantly, building up a portfolio of incredible locations now will let you indulge your pent-up travelling frustrations when going overseas is allowed again. Whether that’s in a couple of months or next March 17th, it doesn’t matter.

What matters is that you are always prepared, like a good Boy Scout. The question is, where do you go? Ireland is the obvious choice, but it’s popular and expensive, which means it’s often either out of people’s price range or unavailable on this date. However, that doesn’t mean you should stay at home and act as if the holiday doesn’t mean anything.

If you have Irish heritage, or you love using Patrick’s Day as an excuse to have fun, you must embrace the tradition. With that in mind, here are four perfect places to celebrate that aren’t in Ireland. Enjoy!

Boston, USA

Is there a country that has an affinity with Ireland more than the United States? Lots of former residents have left Eire and Northern Ireland to relocate, which means there are several hot spots. But, the US is probably the biggest one since the 19th and 20th-centuries saw millions of Irish people descend on the American dream.

You could visit lots of places in America, especially on the east coast. New York, for instance, is brilliant due to the city’s ties to the home nation. However, it’s Boston that has the biggest population of Irish immigrants, as well as US nationals with Irish heritage. As a result, the city in Massachusetts puts on a show every year.

There’s a parade, lots of drinking, and thousands of people having fun and celebrating their roots. And, you don’t require much to attend, other than flights and accommodation. You can find out more about ESTA requirements by clicking on the link.

Anyone who likes to have fun will be bowled over by the number of Irish bars and pubs welcoming all types of tourists and travellers. Plus, the Guinness isn’t bad, either. When you put it like that, it’d be rude not to sample what Boston has to offer!

Padua, Italy

Italy is one of the last places you’ll think of when imagining Patrick’s Day celebrations. If anything, the jewel of the Med is closely associated with Wales, not Ireland. That’s true, but it isn’t inclusive of all the areas and regions within Italy. Padua is a prime example of a small town that takes the festival seriously.

Located near Treviso, Padua is a place that’s known for being a university hub more than anything else. But, with 25,000 people filling the streets in normal times, it’s rightly billed as one of the best places to enjoy Patrick’s Day in Europe.

It’s not only the number of people that add to the atmosphere. It’s the fact that Italy is a nation that knows how to throw a party. They call it “Festa Irlandese,” and make it authentic by combining pints of the ruby red stuff with plates of pasta. Trust – it’s not as weird as it sounds!

Plus, everything is free, apart from the food and alcohol. So, there’s no reason to fret about extortionate costs pricing you out of the festivities. As long as you can afford flights and accommodation, you’re pretty much set.

""

Berlin, Germany

The capital of Germany is known for its culture, so it’s no surprise that it throws a cracking St Paddy’s Day party, too. With beer gardens and steiners, there’s no doubt the Germans understand the foundations of having a good time. Throw Oktoberfest in the mix and you have some of the best experiences in the world.

Yet, there’s more to Berlin than meets the eye concerning Patrick’s Day. Firstly, the city is packed with Irish pubs, which means there is always somewhere to take refuge on March 17th. Secondly, the Irish population in the capital is growing larger by the year and doesn’t look set to stop.

After all, Eire is still within the EU, so university students can continue to live and study in the EU for free, even if there is a bit of a housing shortage. As the number of people with Irish roots increases, it’s bound to intensify the celebrations. They have more skin in the game.

Plus, Berlin is an incredible place to be in general. As well as the wall, there’s a host of things to do when Patrick’s Day passes and you have to get on with enjoying the rest of your break.

Birmingham, England

Okay, Birmingham isn’t quite where you had in mind. Not only will staycations have lost their shine by the time March 17th rolls around again, but you’ve got airline and package holiday vouchers you want to use up before they expire. Sadly, Birmingham doesn’t cut the mustard with Jet2.

Still, look at it another way. With the world opening up again in the summer, you might not be able to afford another international break next spring. You could indulge too much this year, leaving 2022 wide open for Paddy’s Day staycation.

You could pick worse places. After all, it’s been hosting the festival for decades, since the 1950s. Therefore, it has experience in throwing a decent bash. Also, it attracts up to 100,000 people annually. Compared to the rest of the world, only Dublin and New York compare. Then, there’s the fact that it’s easily accessible. Let’s face it – if you do have last-minute plans, Birmingham isn’t at the ends of the earth! All-in-all, England’s second city is a hub for St Patrick’s Day visitors.

These are four ideas, but there are plenty more. Where is your ideal destination?
