What is covered with Post Office Travel Insurance policies?
This is the always the first question I ask when researching travel insurance policies. The whole point of travel insurance is to remove worry and uncertainty which is exactly why it is crucial to know what is and, more importantly, not covered. Here is the snapshot of what is covered in a Post Office travel insurance policy:
- Cancellation and curtailment
- Missed departures
- Emergency medical expenses
- Baggage – lost, stolen and damaged
Over 65s Travel Insurance
The Post Office have some really good cover for over 65s. Don’t let your age get in the way of the right policy to give you peace of mind.
There are different types of cover that you can purchase. You can get single trip insurance up until the age of 85 and multi-trip cover up to the age of 75. It is crucial to have travel insurance when you go on your adventure so it is good to have a trusted supplier to buy from!
Single Trip Travel Insurance
Heading off on a single trip? As the name suggests, single trip insurance is the best cover for you! This is probably the simplest form of travel insurance and is is the most popular for that reason. Whether you are going on a short city break in the UK or a year-long trip around the world, this policy has you covered.
Your travel insurance policy is valid for up to 365 days so you can travel for extended periods of time without worrying. Whilst you will be covered for up to 1 year, this policy is only for people who are completing a single trip. If you are adding multiple destinations (and breaks in between) to your itinerary then you should consider multi-trip cover.
Things worth noting about this policy from the Post Office:
- 24/7 emergency help line
- Up to £10 million emergency medical cover
- All medical conditions are considered
- Optional extras for golf, cruise, winter sports, gadgets and other add-ons are available
Annual Travel Insurance
Got the travel bug? If you take multiple trips per year then taking out an annual multi-trip policy makes financial sense and removes some admin from each holiday or business booking.
As the world shrinks and we are all travelling more each year, getting your hands on an annual multi-trip policy just makes sense. Jump on that last minute flight and know that you are covered! You can take your family with you without any additional admin needed. Annual multi-trip insurance policies from the Post Office include named children so you don’t have to take out any additional cover.
Note: there is a limit as to how long any individual trip can be to meet the policy terms. The exact details depend on the policy that you want to take out and suits your needs. The standard packages are typically 17 or 31 days but you can extend this to 45 or 60 days for an additional premium. Your own travel patterns will determine which cover is best for you!
Highlights of annual multi-trip policies from the Post Office:
- Get cover for a whole year on one policy
- Each trip can last up to 60 days (varies per policy)
- Optional cover for winter sports and more
- All medical conditions are considered
- Up to £10 million emergency cover for medical bills
Backpacker Travel Insurance
Ready to make the journey of a lifetime? Get rid of the headache cover with a policy that has been built for backpackers. This bespoke cover from Post Office travel insurance is not just for school leavers so if you are considering a sabbatical from work or a break from your everyday then this is a solid policy.
The key differences between backpacker and annual travel insurance is that this poliacy lasts longer and you can return home for short periods of time. Do note that backpacker travel insurance covers one single trip rather than multiple trips within a period of time.
Further notes on backpacker insurance:
- You can return home 3 times for up to 7 days during your trip
- You have access to the 24/7 helpline
- An option to add winter sports and excess waiver to your policy
- Access up to £2 million emergency medical cover
Existing Medical Conditions
Do you have pre-existing medical conditions? Don’t let that stop you getting quality travel insurance for your next trip! At the Post Office, all conditions are considered. Whether you have diabetes, high blood pressure and some forms of cancer.
You can get a quote either online or by phone. It is important to disclose the information that the Post Office need to make a fair and accurate quote based on your needs. Having an EHIC is very important but it should be used alongside comprehensive travel insurance, not instead of!
Cruises are a great way to see the world and there are some superb options available. One of my favourite liners at the moment is Marella (TUI cruises) so they are worth a look. Anyway, if you have already booked and are looking for cover then make sure you get the relevant policy for cruises.
A cruise holiday is typically more expensive than your average getaway so it is important to invest in the right cover to go alongside it. There are certain elements that makes cruise travel insurance stand out from other policies. These points include:
- Cover for missed departure or port for when things go wrong
- Cruise interruption due to health or passport reasons
- Evening dress hire for those special nights if the worst happens to your luggage!
Fanatical golf players who like to extend their love of the game to their travels are in luck. The Post Office have an optional premium that you can add to your policy to cover your golf holiday. Knowing that you are covered will allow you to focus on your game and returning home victorious!
The golf cover premium covers:
- Injury – trips, falls and even from a stray golf ball
- Equipment – protected against loss, theft and damage
- Personal liability – your shot not as straight as you wanted? Don’t let that cost you with this £2 million cover
If you hit a hole in one and want to honour the tradition of buying the first round of drinks back at the club house, you can even claim for that! Check out your policy for specific details.
Winter Sports Cover
The more adventurous among you may be considering (or already booked) some winter sports fun! Skiing and snowboarding are great ways to escape the rat race and enjoy something very different to the norm. There are, however, some additional risks that come with the adrenaline.
A standout feature of Post Office travel insurance is their off-piste cover. Push your limits without impacting your cover with a quality winter sports insurance policy.
Key features of this cover:
- Accidents. Whatever winter sport you are enjoying, never be left stranded on the mountain
- Equipment. Winter sports equipment isn’t cheap and without it, there isn’t much you can do
- Piste closure. As your holiday is somewhat dependent on the weather, it is good to know you are covered if there is no snow to board on!
Losing your gadget can be nearly as dramatic as losing your boarding pass (in fact, it may even be the same thing!). Get cover to protect yourself against loss or theft and to make sure you are connected again as soon as possible. You can get up to £1000 cover for devices such as:
- Mobile phones
- Games Consoles
- Activity trackers
- Other wearable tech
Take a look at the policy wording when taking out this add-on so that you know what is and isn’t covered.
There are fewer bigger frustrations for holidaymakers than delayed flights. This is especially problematic if you are on a short break or weekend getaway where every hour counts!
Flight delay repayments can be a complicated topic with some many variables to consider. This guide is a good starting point to see what you are eligible for and how to make the relevant claim.
