York is one of the most magical places to visit at Christmas time. From ice skating in a winter wonderland to seeing an enchanting lightshow extravaganza, there are a wide range of festive activities happening in and around the medieval city which are guaranteed to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

For inspiration, we’ve compiled a list of the top five fun things to do in York this 2020 Christmas season.

The History of Christmas in York Tour:

As night falls, take a step back in time as your tour guide walks you through the ancient city, revealing how the Romans and Vikings celebrated the festive season and how their traditions have evolved into the Christmas we know and love today.

As a product of the Instagrammable York Tour, your guide will take you through some of the city’s most charming locations, lit by twinkling lights, to create a magical atmosphere like no other.

The tour lasts 90 minutes, beginning at Exhibition Square and finishing around the gigantic Christmas tree in St Helen’s Square. As this is a group tour, social distancing measures are applied to ensure optimum safety and joy for all.

An Array of Festive Staycation Packages at The Grand, York:

For those who were hoping to get away this Christmas, The Grand, York are offering an impressive selection of Christmas staycation packages for the whole family.

Enjoy an overnight stay or take an entire weekend to relax and unwind in York’s most luxurious hotel, making the most of their five-star suites, spa, and gourmet food. What’s more, the famous hotel is decked out with enchanting festive décor to ensure for a fabulous Christmas holiday.

Christmas garden extravaganza at Castle Howard:

Located 30 minutes from York city centre, Castle Howard are putting on their annual light show extravaganza in the estate’s gardens. This year, the truly magical event has the theme of ‘Wish Upon A Frozen Star’, following the storyline of Jack Frost and his icy spell.

The immersive experience includes festive illuminations, soundscapes, and an impressive light show onto the façade of the House. To make it an evening, sample some of the delicious warming food from one of the many food vans lined up on the light trial route.

This spectacular Christmas event is sure to be a hit with the whole family.

Christmas shopping at the Shambles:

The Shambles is arguably one of the most festive areas of the city, with charming traditional buildings and lights all around. Filled with intricate, independent stores and eateries, it is the perfect place to find that special Christmas gift.

Yorkshire’s winter wonderland:

The annual Winter Wonderland returns in November for its 16th year, located at the York Designer Outlet just a short ride out of the city centre. The award-winning event hosts a ginormous ice rink, measuring 975 square metres with a 30ft high twinkling Christmas tree in the centre.

What’s more, there is a winter trail leading to Santa’s grotto, where you will receive a special gift from Santa himself! For a bite to eat and a warming glass of mulled wine, visit the alpine après ski café next to the ice-rink to cosy up after your trip. Alternatively, have fun on one of the vintage-themed rides at the funfair.

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland truly is a magical place for those of any age.

Whilst York is a fabulous city to visit throughout the year, it has that added charm and sparkle during the Christmas season. Be sure to book in advance for any of these events as they are popular and loved by many.

Caroline

Hi, I’m Caroline, welcome to Breaks.com! This is where I share travel inspiration, great deals, reviews and lots more. If you've come to this page it's likely you want to know a bit more about me. I am originally from the Netherlands, a tiny country in Northwestern Europe. When I was 19 I decided to jump over the pond and move over to the UK. I lived in London for 5 years and in that time got a BA degree in English Literature. We recently relocated to Bedford and now I spend most my time on this website creating/updating content, and walking our gorgeous rescue dog. Whatever time is left I use to plan my next trip! Currently I'm most invested in discovering more of the UK; you don't always need to go far to see beautiful things. Dog friendly places are always a bonus! Have you got content you want to share, blog opportunities or want to know more about me? I’d love to hear from you! I've got a media kit to share with you and am always up for a chat. Have a look on my 'Work with us' page to find out how we could collaborate. Please get in touch on [email protected] Hope you enjoy the content on breaks!
